Silent Service Developer: Sid Meier Publisher: Sid Meier Year: 1985 Rating: 8/10 Review: Silent Service is one of the early games made by legend Sid Meier. What you don't know who Sid Meier is? ;) Sid Meier created such titles as Civilization and Railroad Tycoon. As far as I know Sid created Silent Service for the Amiga and the C64. Of course later on came Silent Service 2 for the PC with great graphics and gameplay. But back to this game. :) Its a Submarine Simulator and it goes a little like this. The game is set in the Second World War. You controle a submarine (but you guessed that). The battlefield is the pacific ocean where offcourse you'll be fighting the Japanese. At the start you get three choices. First choice is to practice. You can practice things like shooting the deckgun or shooting torpedo's. This can be done in different situations and weather. The second choice is convoy actions. Here you'll get into the action right away. The third and last choice is war patrols. You'll be able to patrol the sea via a map. When there is action you imediatly go to a view of the inside of your sub. When you start a game from the menu you'll first go to a view of the inside of the sub. You can move to any station you want. There is the ladder to the outside view, there is the periscope, the map, damage view and offcourse the station where all the meters are. At that last station you can check how many torpedo's you've got and check things like speed and depth. And with all this you should be able to attack the many different ships. There are all kinds of ship like carriers, troop transports, tankers and many more. You can attack these with your deckgun or the torpedo's. And with all that you should be on your way reclaiming the sea's from the Japanese. A pretty good game with plenty of features. Probably the same amount as on Silent Service 2. I can live with the graphics because that was kind of the graphics you had on the C64. It has some cool sound effects like warnings when you dive or when you are being attacked. So its a good early Sid Meier game and you couldn't go wrong by giving it a go. :) |
