Review: Before this PC release Rampart was a big hit in arcade - the arcade version was released in 1990 by Atari but the game was so popular that some arcade places had it still in 1995.

Rampart is a medieval wargame which mixes elements from two genres: action and strategy.
In the single player game your duty is to defend your castle by shooting all the advancing enemy boats and troops. Before this shooting (Combat Phase) you have to place available cannons inside your castle's walls. After the Combat Phase, you have time to repair your castle in the Repair Phase - reparing is done by putting randomly created blocks (similiar to tetris blocks) in the holes of your wall, when all the holes are filled your castle is saved. The Repair Phase (like all the other phases) has a limited time and if you're not able to fill all of the holes, you will lost your castle. In the Repair Phase you can also try to conquer more castles by surrounding them with walls.
The single player game is pretty easy at the beginning but the game gets harder pretty fast: more enemies, shorter repair times and more complicated blocks in the Repair Phase.

The multiplayer game's idea is almost the same but this time your goal is to destroy your friend's castle. Rampart supports three player game on one computer, supported controllers are: keyboard, mouse and joystick. Keyboard and joystick are ok but the mouse is a bit difficult to control in Repair Phase. On the other hand, it's much faster and more accurate in the Combat Phase than keyboard or joystick.

Rampart's graphics are good and so are the music and the sound effects. At least the gameover-animation has a nasty sound (heh).

Overall Rampart is very original and addictive game, at least when playing with one or more friends. If you don't already have it, get it now.
