M1 Tank Platoon Developer: MicroProse Publisher: MicroProse Year: 1989 Rating: 9/10 Review: M1 Tank Platoon was the first tank simulator I've played and it's still the best tank simulator ever made in my opinion. However, I haven't tried that one Abrams game that has been released in 1998 (can't remember its name, though). Well, the plot in M1 Tank Platoon is quite typical, the Russians have once again started an invasion in Europe and it's your mission to stop that. But this time you are not alone, you have your own platoon of four tanks and additional support in every mission, for example artillery, helicopters, infantry and other tank platoons. The game has two training missions, single engagements and a campaign. Campaign has different kind of missions from object defending to assaults. Before every mission you get a short briefing about the mission - briefing tells you everything you need to know about the mission, for example: mission objectives, enemy strength and your support units. When the mission begins you can choose do you want to command the battle tactically by giving orders using tactical map. Or you can be in action, controlling the tank by yourself. The map shows hills, rivers, buildings and such, it also shows friendly and enemy units, however, only the enemies which are in line of sight are shown on the map. M1 Tank Platoon allows you to play three different places in your tank. You can sit on commander's place which gives you a good overview of the battle. On driver's place you can naturally drive the tank - this is sometimes necessary because the tank doesn't always follow your commands as he should. Commander's place has also a machine gun which you can use against trucks, planes and other light armored units. However, because of the graphics it's sometimes difficult to say is the target a truck or a tank for example. Third place you can play in is the gunner's position. When you are not shooting enemies that are in line of sight the tank's crew keeps on shooting. Your tank has two types of ammunition HEAT (High Explosive Anti-Tank and AP (Armor Piercing). HEAT shells are used against units with light armor and AP ammunition should be used against well-armored units (tanks). Remember that modern Russian tanks will need more than a one direct hits with AP shells. The game doesn't have all the ammunition types that a real M1 Abrams uses, for example there are no Sabot or STAFF shells.
M1 Tank Platoon's sound effects are pretty good and should work with many sound cards. Graphics are above average -
but like I already said it's sometimes difficult to identify enemy tank's model. Even today M1 Tank Platoon is a good tank simulator (only a few real tank simulations have been released after this one). So you should really get this great game.
