Review: After all these years "Carrier Command" still kicks ass. For anybody who doesn't know this game it goes a little like this. ;)
Carrier Command is a strategy game set in a chain of volcanic islands. These islands are very rich in resources. The island have only recently been discovered and arn't yet claimed by anyone. And then you come in play. You rush in with your carrier to colonize them. But on the other side is an enemy carrier and he's allready colonized about ten islands. So you better hurry up. :)
That was the story. Now its on to the details. :) In the game you are in command of a carrier (hence the name "Carrier Command"). Their are also some fun air and ground craft but I'll get to in a moment. :) The carrier has a cool range of options. Mounted on top is a powerful laser and their are some big missiles wich can be launched via a viewing drone. In case someone blasts some missiles at your carrier you've got some decoys. There are flares you launch in the air but there are also drones wich you can position in all kinds of formations around your ship. So, thats all the stuff on the ship. There are also two kinds of craft you can launch. First there is the Manta wich is a sort of fighter plane. It can be equiped with lasers, missiles and some neat cluster bombs. And last but not least is the walruss. This is a surface vehicle. Its an amphious vehicle and therefore its your main vehicle for attacking islands. This baby is equiped with a big laser and with missiles that can be remote controlled. It can also be equiped with packages for establishing bases on empty islands. Every island has command center. If its an enemy command center you can fire a virus bomb from your walruss. That way you don't have to destroy anything. You can just take over the island with all buildings intact. Well, that should be it about the units and the carrier. The main form of navigation for your ship is the map (but you probably guessed that). You can program a course on the and the units will go there in a straight line. Now your off to take all the islands but watch out because the enemy carrier will be on the other side taking island at an insane pace. And every island has its own defenses like missiles on the ground and manta's. It wouldn't all be too dificult if it wasn't for the fact that you need to restock on supplies when you run out. And this can take a while leaving you exposed to attacks from the enemy carrier.
Well thats about it. My conclusion is that this a pretty good game. Its all in 3d and the units and objects are composed of polygons. It has VGA graphics and a big load of features. The enemy is pretty smart. After having played this game a couple of "hundred" times I noticed that the AI of the enemy carrier was pretty good. Almost everything in the game depends on keeping up suplie lines with the other islands under you controll. Knowing this I tried to cut off the enemy's supply lines so he would just run out of fuel. First nothing happend but suddenly (and very unexpected) the enemy carrier attacked me. Obviously it had noticed my plans and had decided to stop me before it was too late. Thats pretty good for a game made in 1988. So all in all you can't go wrong trying this one. I know I spent weeks playing it and even now I sometimes start it up and get adicted to it again.
