Beach Head 2 - The Dictator Strikes Back Developer: Bruce Carver and Roger Carver Publisher: Access Software Inc. Year: 1985 Rating: 9/10 Review: A beach head is where an invading army lands. Well, it isn't a beach head until the invaders secure it. Just like this game there are usually a fair number of bunkers on the enemy beach. Filled with anything from machine guns to mortars. Beach Head 2 was programmed by Bruce Carver who also made Beach Head. He also programmed a few other c64 games like: Neutral Zone, Raid Over Moscow and a couple of others. As you probably have noticed they are mostly war games but he also made sport games. Bruce Carver made alot of his games for Access Software. Access Software was bought by Microsoft in 1999 and they are now famous for producing award winning golf simulations like links wich I'm sure you all know. Well, at least all of you who have played golf games. Access Software allready had fair number of golf titles on the c64. These include games like World Class Leaderboard, Leaderboard Tournament, World Class Leaderboard Family Courses Of The World Volume 1 and fair number of others. Bruce Carver has had a long career of making games. The last one as early as 1998 I think. In my opinion he should be considered up their with the other great programmers like Sid Meier who is still going strong after all these years. Well, thats enough interesting history. On to the gameplay. As you allready now Beach Head is about capturing a beach so that the rest of the troops can land. This time though this isn't an invasion. That is because the dictator who was defeated last time is back to take revenge. Of course its your job to get them back. It starts with the friendly troops being dropped from a helicopter. They are under fire right away. What happens next depends on what side you are. You can be either the allies or the dictator. If you are with the allies you'll have have to get your men to safety behind the barriers from wich you'll be able to launch an attack on the enemy bunker. If you are the dictator its pretty simple. All you have to do is kill every soldier. Sounds easy but the controlles are pretty tough. It takes some practise for you to be able to hit a soldier. When you manage to get through you'll be able attack or defend the dictators fort where the hostages are held. The situation is pretty much the same as to the first level. You either control the attacking soldiers or the gun. Part two comes with what I think are improved graphics and gameplay. Sometimes sequels are not an improvement on the last version but thats not the case here. Certainly worth your time once you get the hang of it. Thats because the controlles can seem a bit tough and slow in the beginning. Go ahead and play it.
